Mexico plays a lot of softball during the summer but not together.
Many of the Lady Bulldogs compete in travel ball but had the chance to play together on July 8 in their only scrimmages of the summer. They defeated Community R-6 twice in a home doubleheader.
Head coach Hanna Jones said the jamboree prior to the fall season will be the next time Mexico plays together. There have been open fields and weight room workouts, too, but Jones said the senior class at the core makes this team look good for the upcoming season.
“Our pitching staff is really experienced, which is reassuring for our defense,” Jones said. “We have some quality hitters in our lineup.”
Keerstan Ewing and Aleigha Henderson have been pitching for Mexico since they were freshmen, and Payton Shaw returns to the middle of the lineup. Jones said there is more to this large senior class.
“We have a lot of good leaders,” Jones said. “A lot of them are girls that have been playing varsity, so it’s nice to have that leadership.”
Jones said Mexico is figuring out which players could fill key positions and will be more confident on the field when they find those answers. She took the scrimmages as opportunities to try different combinations to see who can handle each role best physically and mentally.
“I get a feel of who’s comfortable with playing where,” Jones said. “I like to put girls in multiple positions because that helps our team the most — having flexibility like that.”
