Mexico beats Fatima 10-0 in six innings for Southern Boone tournament title
Mexico emerged the best out of a loaded field this weekend.
Among an eight-team field that contained four state-ranked teams, the Bulldogs won the Southern Boone Classic tournament championship on Saturday afternoon after beating Fatima 10-0 in six innings. Mexico (19-10) went 3-0 against three state-ranked teams in its pool on Thursday and Friday and then beat Fatima (14-12), who it lost to 3-1 in last year's Southern Boone tournament.
Mexico scored three runs in the first inning via a Jaydon Eldridge sacrifice fly, an error on a Drew DeMint fly ball to center field and a Brady Fox groundout. DeMint made a diving catch in center field for a 1-2-3 inning during Fatima's home half of the first inning.
Kaden Benne turned in a great start on the mound by pitching six innings with four strikeouts, three hits and one walk.
Eldridge finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs, Fox and Landon Hilderman each had two RBIs, and Sam Ryan scored three runs.
The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine games.
Mexico (5-4 NCMC) hosts its North Central Missouri Conference and regular season finale at 5 p.m. Monday against Marshall (2-17, 0-8 NCMC).
North Callaway third-place game slips away 7-2 against ranked Southern Boone
North Callaway had hung around with state-ranked and Class 4 competition all weekend.
That was the case on Saturday morning for Class 3 No. 7 North Callaway in the third-place game of the Southern Boone Classic tournament at Southern Boone, trailing Class 4 No. 7 Southern Boone 3-2 after five and a half innings before losing 7-2.
The Thunderbirds (17-5) allowed four runs in the sixth inning after issuing four walks and two balks in the inning. North Callaway drew four walks against Logan Easley in the sixth inning prior to that, scoring on a walk to Carson Bassett and Chance Green groundout.
Easley finished with six walks, five strikeouts, three hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Bassett pitched 5 1/3 innings for North Callaway and had six strikeouts, three hits and two walks issued in the sixth inning. Three of Bassett's five runs allowed were earned. He didn't allow a hit in the first three innings.
Coach Jesse McKee said Southern Boone (22-8) made multiple diving catches to rob North Callaway of hits. The Eagles had seven hits compared to North Callaway's five hits.
North Callaway (9-0 EMO) plays its Eastern Missouri Conference and regular season finale at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Silex (9-5, 7-2 MO) at home. It will be Senior Night for the Thunderbirds but could be even more of a special night as they go for an undefeated conference season.
