Boston Davolt secured one state victory before his high school career ended on Thursday.
The Mexico recent graduate won his first-round match at the Class 1 singles tournament at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield before losing his next two matches to be eliminated.
Davolt defeated Crystal City’s Nathaniel DeClue 6-4, 1-6 and 10-7 after head coach Tony Senor said he overcame a 0-3 start in the first set and closed the tiebreaker in the third set with his serve.
He lost to returning state medalist Justin Janasz, of St. Pius X (Kansas City), 6-0, 6-0 because Senor said Davolt couldn’t keep rallies or his serve going.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Davolt lost to Excelsior Springs’ Austin Collins 6-0, 6-1 after Collins did well acting as a “backboard” for all of Davolt’s shots.
“Collins was a very quick tennis player,” Senor said. “He was able to get to all of Boston's long baseline shots and his drop shots near the net.”
Senor said Davolt grew a lot in his four years as the program and finished strong by making it to state in his last opportunity.
“Being considered top 16 in the state of Missouri is an honor and the Mexico tennis staff is very proud to have coached him all four years of his high school career,” Senor said.
