For the first time in team history the Mexico High School academic team won their home tournament. Going 4-0 in the morning rounds and rolling through the competition including a 200-plus point win against Calvary Lutheran, the Bulldogs made the playoffs.
Freshman Camden Williams was the tournament's top scorer through the first games averaging 95 points per game (or 9.5/20 questions). Senior Sydney Moeller was 11th at 40 points per game.
Entering the playoffs the Bulldogs won the first game easily but lost a nail biter to district rival Palmyra 240-200.
Undeterred, Mexico rallied to beat Boonville in round eight and avenged an earlier season tough North Central Missouri Conference (NCMC) loss to Moberly by finally beating them - by over 200 points.
Versus district rival Palmyra, Mexico came out swinging in round 10, defeating Palmyra by over 200 points. This forced a third matchup, in a winner-takes-all scenario. And in a close battle, Mexico prevailed 180-140 to bring home first place at our home tournament.
The team gave a huge shout out to an excellent lunch provided by Deb Fountain and the Go-Gitters and Ms. Ford and her foodies.
The team is hosting a trivia night on May 7 to help fund their trip to the national tournament in Chicago; watch The Ledger for more information.
