Missouri Military Academy golf will have a lot of underclassmen on the roster this season but have big goals in mind.
Of the 20 on MMA’s roster, there are 16 underclassmen and four seniors. Fernando Puebla is a senior who is the only returning state qualifier and leads a varsity group that has juniors Enrique Briseno and Emiliano Martinez, sophomore Javier Jimenez, and one freshman Alvaro Orendain.
“Fernando has already shown significant improvement this season and will play an important leadership role on the team,” head coach Anthony Yannielli said. “We also returned quite a few from last year but more specifically, Enrique Briseno and Emiliano Martinez. Both have improved significantly, earning varsity spots on the team.”
Yannielli said last season was a great year for the program as two cadets qualified for state and MMA was two strokes away from qualifying as a team. He said that is providing the Colonels extra motivation and helping him in his annual goal of developing a stronger program, which he believes is clearly showing growth.’
“With the leadership of our returning players and the boost from several new cadets joining the program, I believe this team has the potential to be even stronger than last year’s group,” Yannielli said. “Our goal is to continue building a competitive program and ultimately qualify as a team for the state tournament.”
