Logan Mitchell’s golf career continues to impress at Paris.
He is in his third year, and he has qualified for three state tournaments after finishing in a tie for 11th on Thursday in the Class 1 District 2 tournament at Heritage Hills in Moberly. Mitchell shot an 83, or 13-over par, to make it under the state cutoff of 86.
Head coach Jeremy Skinner said Mitchell is the first three-time state qualifier since Chris Ebbesmeyer, making Mitchell the second boy he’s coached to advance to state as a freshman.
“He had a little bit of a rough hole where he went in the water so he had to re-tee,” Skinner said. “He’s already starting two strokes behind on that, but he ended up finishing strong. He placed 11th overall in a district with 107 kids in it.”
Skinner said Mitchell is on track to be the first Paris golfer to make it to four state tournaments because Ebbesmeyer lost a season to COVID-19. Before that, though, he is excited to see how he does Monday and Tuesday at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.
Mitchell led the Paris team to an eight-place finish out of 21 schools with a score of 376. Landen Chapman tied for 33rd with a 92, Bryce Wade tied for 47th with a 98, Kelly Mitchell tied for 60th with a 103, and Hayden Landis was 98th with a 143.
“We’re a pretty solid Class 1 team,” Skinner said. “When we’ve got everybody there, we’re pretty well off.”
Skinner was impressed with Chapman for shooting as well as he did despite Chapman also being a track athlete in the spring. He said Wade “struggled a little bit with his timing” but did well all year for Paris. Kelly Mitchell has been “solid all year” in his senior season, and Skinner looks forward to seeing what the freshman Landis does next year.
“I’m proud of the boys and how well they’ve played with their improvements throughout the year,” Skinner said.
