Paris played Lincoln for the second time this season, but it was a new experience.
The Coyotes scored 50 points against the Cardinals again in a 50-0 victory in Lincoln on Friday but did it with all-state wide receiver Logan Mitchell at quarterback. Paris (6-2) has won three straight while scoring 50 points in all of those games and will host a Class 1 District 8 tournament game at 7 p.m. Friday against Keytesville with Northwestern (Mendon), Brunswick (1-8).
Spencer Minks is the Paris starting quarterback, but head coach Cody Carney said they allowed him to rest against Lincoln (1-8) after getting hurt in practice. Mitchell hadn’t played quarterback since middle school with some practice reps in high school in case of this scenario.
“It took us a little bit to get going, but once we found our groove, we were alright,” Carney said. “The first drive, he struggled a little bit, but he was good to go after that. He’s a leader.””
Mitchell ran for three touchdowns and 62 yards and threw a touchdown pass to fellow senior Bryce Wade. Carney said the passing game wasn’t as strong this time with Paris having 49 passing yards, with Mitchell throwing for 29 yards on 5-for-8 passing, and Paris rushing for 132 yards. Carney said the offense can adjust.
“Luckily for us, our offense is pretty well designed,” Carney said. “We can pass or run out of the things we do depending on what we did to accomplish that night.”
Carney added the defense playing well helped get by without Minks for one week. The Coyotes posted their first shutout while allowing 73 yards of offense after coming as close as allowing six points in the first meeting with Lincoln. Wade led with seven tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack, Kaden Lehenbauer had seven tackles and two tackles for loss, and Sawyer Clements had seven tackles.
Paris hosts Keytesville for the second time this season after falling to the No. 3 seed because Knox County won the head-to-head matchup with Paris.
“Even though we’re going into Week 10, you’ve still got to work the fundamentals,” Carney said. “You have to get better at blocking and tackling because it’s those little details that’s going to determine whether we’re going to make the play or not when it comes time for these bigger games.”
