Missouri Military Academy wins two duals in first two meets

Missouri Military Academy started its season on the wrestling mat by earning good early-season experience.

MMA lost both of its opening duals in a tri meet on Monday in Fulton, being defeated 46-30 by Eldon and 54-24 by Fulton. On Wednesday, the Colonels finished with a 2-1 record in a quad meet at St. Francis Borgia in Washington, defeating Borgia 48-27 and Maplewood-Richmond Heights 66-6 and losing 63-12 to district foe Father Tolton.

“This was our first look at a district opponent for the year, Father Tolton, and while the score was not in our favor, it was a good look at where we need to get before districts in February,” head coach Levi Iman said. “Team captain Ryan Miles wrestled a hard six minutes with his opponent, losing by three points, but demonstrating to all that MMA wrestlers do not quit in the face of adversity. (David) Trevino, new to MMA wrestling this year, came out with two pins on the night capitalizing on quick thinking and the half nelson.”

Russell Olson at 215 pounds gave MMA its lone pin against Tolton, but it had five pins in the first period in the dual victory against Borgia and seven pins against Maplewood-Richmond Heights. Against Borgia, Deonte Kerns at 132, Sam Stevens at 138, Miles at 150, Trae Griffiths at 157 and Trevino at 175 all scored pinfalls. Against Maplewood-Richmond Heights, the pins came from Kerns, Michael Pfeifer at 144, Miles, Griffiths, Trevino, Olson and Adam Swenson at 190.

On the first night in Fulton, the Colonels finished with five pins against Eldon and two against Fulton. Against Eldon, pins in the first period came from Dallas Grantz at 126, Stevens at 132 and Olson at 215 and second-period pins came from Miles at 150 and Josiah Emminger at 285. Miles and Gabriel Ontiveros at 190 had the pinfalls against Fulton.

Colonels lose second straight to Wright City 66-40

Missouri Military Academy had a better offensive showing against Wright City this season.

Still, the Colonels lost 66-40 in a Wednesday road game following their 51-29 defeat against the Wildcats (2-2) last season, making it MMA's first loss this season. They trailed 29-18 at halftime.

Nathan Dempsey led MMA with 28 points and was followed by Ghina Favour Nziza's five points.

MMA moved to 1-2 after losing 61-48 at Tuscumbia (1-2) on Friday night before its home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Calvary Lutheran (1-2).
