Each of the North Callaway girls were in the win column on Jan. 7.
The Ladybirds hosted a tri meet against Lexington and St. Pius X (Festus). Brooke Giboney, Elka Endres, Lotus Gwaltney and Ella Baker each beat at least one opponent.
Head coach Ronnie Kimbley said he noticed some rust from having a month off because of winter break, but he thought they did well while gaining some valuable match experience.
“We got caught in a couple positions, but that’s about it,” Kimbley said. “They wrestled really well.”
Kimbley said Gwaltney and Baker each were ahead in a couple matches against Lexington but made the one mistake of stepping into throws. However, they each bounced back against St. Pius X (Festus) as Gwaltney won via a 10-9 decision while Baker won via pinfall.
Giboney picked up two wins via pinfall. Endres pinned her Lexington opponent, and St. Pius X (Festus) was open in her weight class.
“The wins are great, but it’s more about the mat experience,” Kimbley said. “We’re progressing, and taking what we’re doing in the practice room and putting it on the mat. That’s what we really want to see.”
Kimbley has been impressed with how each girl has started the season because he believes they are all progressing like they can. Endres and Baker stood out at the large and competitive Battle at the Katy Trail tournament in Sedalia by finishing second and third in their respective weight classes.
“That was a great turnout there,” Kimbley said. “They’re cruising and doing well.”
