The North Callaway girls had seen sights like on Saturday before.

Natalie Shryock caught fire in the second half from the perimeter, knocking down four straight 3-pointers, and Lakyn Hartley stuffed the stat sheet in the Ladybirds’ 43-38 season-opening win over Macon in the Gary Filbert Classic in Mexico.
Macon only led by one or two points at the end of the first three quarters but lost it in the fourth quarter and failed to retake the lead. Head coach Andrew Klein said North Callaway finally was playing how it needed to gain an edge.
“We rebounded the ball better,” Klein said. “If we had rebounded the way we did in the fourth quarter all night, I don’t think we would’ve given up 38 points. We gave up a lot of second-, third- and fourth-chance opportunities for that team. Eventually, they were going to hit some shots because they have some good players.”
Reece Barnett led Macon with 11 points and three 3-pointers, but North Callaway had girls like Sophie Olsson pulling down nine rebounds, Livia Hartley having five rebounds and seniors Lakyn Hartley and Shryock finishing with four rebounds each.
The team’s lone two seniors gave North Callaway the offensive push it needed for victory. Shryock finished with 19 points and five 3-pointers and didn’t miss from deep in the fourth quarter.
“She caught fire at the end, hitting some 3s for us and just walking into a couple,” Klein said. “She’s a senior and a good shooter. We know that. Just to have the confidence and legs to be able to shoot, that’s what a senior does and we needed that tonight.”
Hartley was named the Gary Filbert Player of the Game after finishing with a solid 11 points while being an all-around difference maker with six steals, four rebounds and four assists. Klein said she was crucial in finding Shryock open on the perimeter and countering the smothering defense from Macon.
“She did a really good job of getting Nat the ball in those situations,” Klein said. “She associated two or three of those 3s that Nat hit. She also did a great job rebounding the ball, pushing it in transition and getting deflections when we went to a zone. She did everything well today, and she deserves the player of the game.”
