Girls wrestling continues to grow at North Callaway.
Brooke Giboney returns as the Ladybirds’ first ever state qualifier and will be part of a roster of six girls, which doubles from last year’s total.
Head coach Ronnie Kimbley takes over as the girls head coach again this season and steps away from the head coaching position with the boys in favor of Brock Davis. Kimbley said at the end of last season Giboney had a tough draw in her first ever state appearance, being eliminated after going 0-2 against the eventual state champion and third-place finisher, but brings that experience back.
“I’m expecting her to be someone the girls can lean on for leadership,” Kimbley said. “We have Brooke, a junior, one sophomore and four freshmen.”
With all of the others on the roster being underclassmen, Kimbley said patience for improvement is definitely required but is glad to see girls wrestling programs at North Callaway “growing at all levels.”
“We are definitely young, but everyone brings something different to the room that will help everyone improve,” Kimbley said. “We have to be patient and focus on the little things and wrestle every position. Our goal is to be a team that competes for the podium in every tournament that we enter.”
