North Callaway lost its first game of the season on April 14 against Mexico.

The Thunderbirds allowed a season-high 15 runs and seven errors that day but then followed that with back-to-back Eastern Missouri Conference victories on Thursday at Elsberry and on Friday against Clopton at home, winning 4-0 and 10-0, respectively. Class 3 No. 5 North Callaway (10-1, 6-0 EMO) didn’t commit any errors in those games, convincing head coach Kirt Kleindienst to say the team is “back on track.”

Carson Bassett pitched seven innings against Elsberry (3-8, 2-4 EMO) with three strikeouts, two hits, one walk and one hit by pitch on 80 pitches. Chance Green and CJ Cunningham each had two hits and one RBI.

Bassett was close to preserving a no-hitter for Carter Moore against Clopton (7-4, 4-2 EMO) with a diving attempt in right field. Moore pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts, one hit, one walk and one hit by pitch on 79 pitches and only had one three-ball count in the game. Caleb Sheets hit his first career high school home run with a three-RBI shot in a five-run first inning, and Cunningham went 2-for-2 with one walk and one run.

North Callaway hosts conference foe Mark Twain (0-8, 0-5 EMO) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
