North Callaway girls fall short 60-44 in South Callaway championship game
The North Callaway girls couldn’t come back for a championship on Saturday.
The Ladybirds trailed 39-15 to Hermann at halftime in the South Callaway Tournament championship game but ended up losing 60-44. North Callaway outscored Hermann (9-5) 20-8 in the third quarter but couldn’t close the distance anymore.
Lakyn Hartley led North Callaway (6-6) with 14 points and three 3-pointers, third team all-tournament player Natalie Shryock had nine points and three 3-pointers, and second team all-tournament player Sophie Olsson had six points.
The Ladybirds escaped the semifinals with a 58-57 win over Russellville (5-7) three days prior.
"It was a good team effort,” head coach Andrew Klein said. “We had five players hit at least one 3-pointer in the game. We got all of the loose balls, which is the key part of our win."
Shryock led with 15 points and four 3-pointers after setting a three-pointer record with nine 3-pointers in the team’s 65-53 win the day before against South Callaway (5-5). Her younger sister, Anna Shryock, had 12 points and four 3-pointers against Russellville, and Livia Hartley had eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
North Callaway (1-2 EMO) played at Eastern Missouri Conference foe and Class 2 No. 3 Clopton (9-2, 3-0 EMO) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
North Callaway boys lose third place 61-51 to host South Callaway
The North Callaway boys couldn’t beat South Callaway in its own tournament for the second straight time.
The Thunderbirds lost the third-place game in the South Callaway Tournament on Saturday to South Callaway 61-51 to follow a North Callaway victory in the previous South Callaway Tournament meeting between the county rivals. South Callaway (5-6) had a 39-24 lead at halftime that didn’t shrink.
Jamarion Glover led North Callaway (4-7) with 13 points and 11 rebounds, finishing as first team all-tournament.
Two days prior, North Callaway lost 58-32 to Hermann (11-2) in the semifinals, trailing 21-10 after the first quarter and was outscored 15-4 in the fourth quarter.
"Hermann is a very physical team,” head coach Matt Miller said. “They beat us pretty good. They have done that to a lot of teams this year. I was very pleased with our team defense. They made several good steals. This is a good learning process and I think we’ll come out as a better team than we went into the game against Hermann.
Glover led with 16 points, eight rebounds and was 5-for-9 from the field, including two 3-pointers.
“Jamarion had a great game, considering he’s just a sophomore,” Miller said. “He was guarded by two players who were taller than him. They’re two physical players."
The Thunderbirds beat Eldon (3-8) 54-51 the day before that, outscoring the Mustangs 15-12 in the fourth quarter. Austin Brown led with 17 points and three 3-pointers, Glover had 11 points, 13 rebounds and four steals, and Jake Blevins had eight points and four assists.
North Callaway (2-1 EMO) plays at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Clopton (8-5, 4-0 EMO) at 7 p.m. tonight.
