North Callaway has been scoring a ton of points this season.
The Thunderbirds went into Friday’s game at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Mark Twain with four straight weeks of at least 50 points and that streak was extended. They won 63-12 after finishing with 465 yards on offense, including 372 rushing yards.
Head coach Kevin O’Neal said he liked how North Callaway (5-2, 4-0 EMO) spread the ball around. Coltyn O’Neal threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers, and 11 kids got at least one carry.
“A couple guys got touches that normally don’t get a lot of touches,” O’Neal said. “Being able to get a lot of different guys involved in the offense, that was our focus tonight. Our offensive line did a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage.”
Senior Brandon Biggers led the team with 63 yards and one touchdown on three carries. O’Neal said Mark Twain (1-6, 0-4 EMO) is a young team that was playing without its starting quarterback and running back, so getting Biggers more involved in the offense was what the team wanted to do.
“Brandon is a solid player for us that doesn’t get as many carries or rushing yards,” O’Neal said. “He’s a very good blocker on the edge, and he’s got several receiving yards and touchdowns.”
The linemen got involved as well. Gunnar Wenneker ran for a five-yard touchdown in a change of pace for the senior lineman. O’Neal said Wenneker even did a “touchdown celebration.”
“I think that’s his first carry ever,” O’Neal said. “I like to reward senior offensive lineman that work hard blocking all year. If we get an opportunity to get them a carry for a touchdown, I think it’s cool to get them a little bit of that recognition, too.”
North Callaway plays another young conference team as it hosts Van-Far (1-6) at 7 p.m. Friday.
“They’re going to come in ready to play I’m sure, but we’ve got to make sure we take care of business and we keep improving each week heading into districts,” O’Neal said.
