Van-Far fixed some issues on Friday and had big moments, but Wright City proved to be a better team.
The Indians lost 48-18 at their Eastern Missouri Conference foe to lose for the third straight week and for the second time against the Wildcats (3-4), who have won three straight games. Van-Far (1-6) trailed 28-0 at halftime.
Head coach Lucas Gibson said Van-Far struggled with the same things it has this season, including hitting a wall up front.
“Their defensive front is really good,” Gibson said. “They had guys in front that caused a lot of problems.”
Van-Far scored for the first time to open the third quarter on a long Cayden Douglas run and then recovered an onside kick to set up a drive that stalled. Gibson said the Indians scored on a trick play, too.
The Indians executed a double reverse flea flicker that ended in a 70-yard touchdown catch by senior Kashton Rhodes.
“We’ve had it in for two or three weeks, but we ran it tonight,” Gibson said. “They executed it. That was good to see.”
Wright City usually has its good athletes, and Gibson said Benjamin Rodriguez fits that bill. Rodriguez ran for three touchdowns.
Van-Far plays at North Callaway (5-2) at 7 p.m. Friday. Gibson said Van-Far is thankful his young team has stayed healthy for the most part to gain experience.
“We knew this was going to be a tough part of the schedule for sure,” Gibson said. “We’re staying healthy so far.”
