For five years, North Callaway hasn’t kept up with Bowling Green.

The Thunderbirds were outscored 270-57 in five straight losses to their Eastern Missouri Conference foe but won 60-12 on Friday during Homecoming for Bowling Green (1-3, 0-2 EMO). North Callaway (4-0, 2-0 EMO) finished with 278 rushing yards for its first 200-yard day on the ground against Bowling Green since 2018.

North Callaway hadn’t reached 100 rushing yards against the five consecutive undefeated conference champions since 2020. Jaiden Galbreath led with 102 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, Wyatt Haden had 68 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and Kellen Long had 51 yards on seven carries along 84 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. Coltyn O’Neal threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-14 passing.

“It felt good to be on the other side of it,” head coach Kevin O’Neal said. “Tonight, we did what we haven’t done in the first three weeks and played from the get-go.”

O’Neal said he liked how North Callaway controlled the line of scrimmage. That task has been difficult by the strong Bowling Green offensive lines over recent seasons.

“A lot of it has to do with our offseason lifting,” O’Neal said while explaining how North Callaway’s linemen can control the line of scrimmage. “They were dedicated to that, the grit that they have and the blocking to the whistle. It’s all the things we worked on this week.”

O’Neal said left tackle Donavan Seiling, left guard Zac Craghead, center Hunter Long, right guard Ben Haubner and right tackle Gunnar Wenneker all have performed well as a unit this season. He said newcomer tight end and basketball star Jamarion Glover has been “a very good addition” to the team blocking on the edge.

Haubner and Kellen Long led the defense with eight tackles and two tackles for loss each.

North Callaway hosts Palmyra (3-1) at 7 p.m. tonight. O’Neal said that it will be a tough team, but there are tough teams like Blair Oaks, Warsaw and Centralia in North Callaway’s district.

“Our theme has been we have to get better each week,” O’Neal said. “We want to be able to compete in a championship in that district. To do so in a tough district, we can’t be satisfied with where we’re at.”
