North Callaway changed the complexion of Friday’s game at Montgomery County in two minutes.
The Thunderbirds beat Montgomery County 44-16 to record their second straight victory over the Wildcats (1-2, 0-1 EMO) and their first win on Montgomery’s home field since 2020. North Callaway (3-0, 1-0 EMO) finished with 360 rushing yards, including 133 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries by Jaiden Galbreath.
Head coach Kevin O’Neal said the start wasn’t much better this week but liked the end of the first half. Coltyn O’Neal threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Petty with 2:32 left in the game before getting the ball back with over a minute left. O’Neal completed a 30-yard touchdown to Nick Threlkeld with 34 seconds left for a 22-8 halftime lead.
“We executed a good two-minute drill right before half,” O’Neal said. “We took control of the game from there.”
Coltyn O’Neal threw for 100 yards on 6-for-11 passing and added a third touchdown pass to Kellen Long for 21 yards in the second half.
Coach O’Neal said it was a pretty balanced offensive night for North Callaway. The two-minute drill close to halftime added to yet another big night on the ground.
“That’s something we do every week where we have a two-minute session,” O’Neal said. “We execute those routes, get out of bounds to stop the clock or (ensure we’re) getting to the ball and running the next play effectively.”
Galbreath helped North Callaway eat clock and scored 22 points in the third quarter. Long finished with 104 yards and one touchdown on eight carries, and Collin Moore had 89 yards on six carries. Long also led the defense with eight tackles, and Ben Haubner had six tackles.
O’Neal hopes this success can carry over into the next conference road game at 7 p.m. Friday at Bowling Green (1-2, 0-1 EMO), who has beaten North Callaway five straight times. He said the perennial EMO powerhouse Bowling Green has lost two straight and has Homecoming this week.
“They’re going to be chomping at the bit to get back on the winning track,” O’Neal said. “We know we’re going to get their best effort.”
