After a long first game, North Callaway carried that winning energy over into another win.
The Thunderbirds defeated Kirksville 7-6 in eight innings at South Callaway in Mokane before defeating district foe South Callaway 13-0 in five innings.
No runs were scored in the first three innings of the Kirksville game and then scoring happened in every inning afterward. After North Callaway (2-0) forced the game into extra innings with two runs to tie at 5 in the seventh, Kirksville (1-1) took a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning. Coltyn O’Neal tied the game with a single and then Tucker Sheets walked off the game with a single later in the inning.
Carter Moore went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, CJ Cunningham went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a double, and Cody Kemp finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, including the winning run. Chance Green was the winning pitcher after striking out two and allowing one earned run on two hits and one walk in two relief innings.
Head coach Kirt Kleindienst said North Callaway did well in its later at-bats in the game to come back and the momentum from that win transitioned into the game against South Callaway (0-2). He said Keaton Bell was “excellent” as he pitched five innings with four strikeouts, four hits and one walk. O’Neal went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including a bases-clearing double in a seven-run first inning, Cunningham finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, and Carson Bassett went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
North Callaway hosts Eastern Missouri Conference foe Wright City (2-1) at 5 p.m. tonight.
