The Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to a fire in the 200 block of East Jackson in reference to a fire in an apartment building early Monday morning around 3 a.m., Oct. 9. Callers were reporting there being fire in multiple apartments and were unsure of the status of other residents. Responding personnel found heavy flame coming from a second-floor apartment. Attack crews attempted to contain the fire while getting people from that building and a smaller apartment attached to the building.
Five adults and an infant successfully evacuated. Shelia D Ball, age 53 of Mexico, died in the fire as did several pets. The fire was extinguished by about 8:30 a.m. but crews remained on scene conducting overhaul and investigating what occurred. The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to assist in the investigation.
