Paris has another streak going to start the 8-man football season.
The Coyotes have scored at least 50 points in each of their first three wins after defeating Lincoln 50-6 on Friday at home. Last year, they started the season 4-0 with at least 50 points scored in each game before meeting North Shelby, which Paris plays at 7 p.m. Sept. 25.
Head coach Cody Carney said it was a slow start against Lincoln (0-3), mainly because of penalties and difficulty snapping the ball, with the Coyotes’ halftime lead being 14-6. He said Paris ironed out those issues and connected on big passing plays, but the defense stood out by only allowing 18 yards.
“Our defense played lights out for pretty much the entire game,” Carney said. “In the first half, they had more than that, but in the second half, it was either a sack or a bad snap. We had three interceptions in the second half, including our defensive lineman (Kaden Graupman) with a pick six.”
Carney said the defense helped the offense and the team as a whole get rolling. Paris had a balanced offense with 134 rushing yards and 127 passing yards.
Spencer Minks passed for all 127 and had three total touchdowns. Logan Mitchell led with 71 rushing yards and had a rushing touchdown and a 51-yard receiving touchdown.
This year’s undefeated start can be attributed to good defense and good play by the skill positions, Carney said, but there are other reasons.
“I’m going to give a lot of credit to our offensive line and tight ends,” Carney said. “Taking the things we’re trying to teach them and apply it to the game and just dominate in the line of scrimmage.”
North Shelby is undefeated as well and has eliminated Paris each of the last two years. Paris is still looking for its first win against the “measuring stick” of the conference and district.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to see how we’re doing,” Carney said.
