Paris ends losing streak on Senior Night with season-high in 67-22 win over Slater

Paris was feeling much better on Friday.

After losing three straight games, the Coyotes scored a season-high to win 67-22 on Senior Night against Slater (1-7). Paris (5-3) finished with 371 total yards, including 225 rushing yards.

Friday’s game looked like a passing showdown on paper with Slater quarterback Tristen Klasing seventh in the 8-man football state rankings in passing yards while Luke Ensor was behind him in eighth. Paris and Slater both ranked in the top 11 passing offense going into the night, but head coach Cody Carney said other factors were at play.

“We got to running the ball early,” Carney said. “We only had one turnover after having several in the last few weeks.”

Carney said Ensor had a good night by going 9-for-11 for 146 yards and three touchdowns through the air. However, Ensor was a threat on the ground with 83 rushing yards and one touchdown.

“They were dropping everybody in coverage and only rushing three,” Carney said. “He only had three designed actual runs, and the other four, everybody dropped in coverage and nobody was open so he just took off running. It is something he’s really wanted to work on this year.”

Sawyer Clements finished with 71 rushing yards and three touchdowns on five carries, Payden Crain had 78 yards and one touchdown on two carries along with an interception.

Logan Mitchell had the other interception against Slater, and Paris sacked Klasing multiple times. Carney said that isn’t easy to do against that quarterback.

“He’s pretty slippery,” Carney said. “He does a good job of extending plays with his legs. He probably throws better on the run than sitting in the pocket. Our guys can’t cover for six seconds. It’s hard to do.”

Carney said he loves to reward the seniors, especially on a night like Friday, because they have worked so hard as the program has changed from 11-man football during their freshmen years to a solid 8-man program. Senior lineman Zach Howard caught a touchdown pass, and senior lineman Jackson Rudderforth caught a two-point conversion after he was shifted to be eligible on the play.

“Nobody gets to see all the hard work you put in,” Carney said. “Everybody just sees the results. It took a whole lot of hard work to get them where they are, and that definitely was their doing.”

Paris closes the regular season at Schuyler County (1-5) at 7 p.m. Friday.
