Paris loses Senior Night game in consistent struggle with Marceline

Paris wanted to snap its losing streak in the final week before districts, but someone familiar on Friday was sure to make it difficult.

Lewis and Clark Conference foe Marceline started its season 0-4 prior to winning four straight and then making it five in a row after handing Paris a 35-0 loss. It is the Coyotes’ 13th straight loss to the Tigers and sixth time in that 12-year span that they were shut out in the rivalry.

Paris’ offensive troubles continued against Marceline (5-4, 5-1 L&C) as the Coyotes (1-8, 0-6 L&C) didn’t eclipse the 10-point threshold since their 36-0 victory at Missouri Military Academy in Week 2. Out of Paris’ 92 yards of total offense, running back Drew Williams ran for 73 yards on 16 carries.

Owen Totten and Gatlin Fountain each finished with 19 tackles on defense, with Totten having a team-high five tackles for loss and Fountain right behind him at four. Marceline finished with 384 yards of total offense and had two touchdowns each through the air and ground and one interception return for a score in the second quarter.

Head coach Joseph Utterback said the game went downhill from the point Paris tried to kick a field goal.

“Marceline put a score on the board and we started driving and got within field goal range,” Utterback said. “I thought we could kick a field goal and get some momentum going, but it was blocked which is a shame because that ball was in line. Gunnar Fountain has been kicking for us this year and was drilling field goals well past the school record this week at practice pretty consistently. From there, Marceline started putting scores on the board and we made mistakes on the field.”

For Senior Night, Paris recognized its seniors, including Williams, Totten and quarterback Leo Bounds, prior to the game. The day before, the seniors painted their numbers into the hill by the sidewalk around Warbritton Field, demonstrating they are the “band of brothers” Utterback has described them to be.

“I wish we could have figured it out and done a little better job Friday night for our seniors on their last night playing on Warbritton Field,” Utterback said. “A huge shout out to Owen Totten, Leo Bounds, Gunnar Fountain, Donald Jones, Alex Williams, Drew Williams, Clayton Duncan, Hunter Hartgrove and Brayden DeOrnellas, who have done a great job of leading the way this year and really getting this thing headed in the right direction.”

Paris goes into the Class 1 District 6 Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will travel to top seed and state No. 1 Monroe City (9-0), who defeated Clark County 50-0 at home in Week 9, at 7 p.m. Friday. Utterback said Monroe City is yet another program that has been built into a perennial contender and one that Paris can aspire to be someday. Since a 3-8 season in 2015, Monroe City has seven straight winning seasons, four years with at least 10 wins (with the 9-0 Panthers being one win away this year), and two state Final Four finishes, with a state title in 2017.

“Coach (David) Kirby has done a fantastic job over the last decade plus cultivating that winning culture,” Utterback said. “We had a chance to talk and he said it didn't start out that way but it's like anything else, you have to water the grass to make it green and they have done a great job of that.”
