Turnovers held Paris back on Friday.
The Coyotes lost 66-48 at Slater in a game that was back-and-forth through a majority of the game. Paris outgained Slater with 534 yards of total offense compared to 362 yards and Luke Ensor threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns on 26-for-38 passing, but turnovers in the first half derailed the Coyotes (5-3).
Head coach Cody Carney said any mistakes are magnified in 8-man football. A Paris fumble was recovered in the end zone for a 28-20 Paris deficit before halftime and a more than 70-yard scoop-and-score by Slater (5-3) made it a 42-34 Paris deficit late in the second half.
“An 18-point ballgame, in 8-man, that’s just a couple plays here and there,” Carney said. “It was just a couple key turnovers.”
Carney said Slater has a couple “really good athletes” and thought coach Eric Bordeleau made good defensive adjustments in the second half.
“Our defensive line did a great job shutting down their inside run game tonight,” Carney said.
Gatlin Fountain ran for a long touchdown and caught a 22-yard touchdown to finish with 17 carries for 147 yards, Reid Ragsdale caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Ensor, Brad Skinner ran for two touchdowns along with 53 yards on 11 carries, Brady Shivers caught a touchdown. Carney added Skinner did well on defense, and Logan Mitchell made some big catches to finish with 11 receptions for 149 yards.
Paris closes the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Schuyler County (5-3) in an opportunity Carney hopes the Coyotes can build momentum going into districts.
“They’re going to be a tough opponent, but we have to keep our nose to the grindstone and just keep trying to polish things up to get a little better at everything we do,” Carney said.
