Paris overtakes Schuyler County, Ensor throws five touchdown passes in win

When Friday night started, Paris was behind Schuyler County in the district standings.

That’s how it was during last year’s meeting with the Rams when the Coyotes lost 74-30. Paris turned the tables at home with a 56-24 victory that included 42 unanswered points and five touchdown passes by Luke Ensor.

Paris (6-3) took the No. 2 seed due to a head-to-head loss to North Shelby earlier in the season but will have first-round bye after the Coyotes locked down defensively in the second half. Head coach Cody Carney said Schuyler County (5-4) took a 16-14 lead after using its good offensive line and running backs to convert multiple fourth downs, but the Rams failed three big fourth-down attempts in the second half that left them one yard or less behind the sticks.

“Their quarterback got hurt,” Carney said. “He’s a great playmaker, and that took them out of their element a little bit. We just started winning those fourth-down conversions.”

Gatlin Fountain, who recovered a fumble 46 yards for a touchdown, finished with double-digit tackles along with Reid Ragsdale and Brad Skinner. Fountain’s defensive touchdown gave Paris a touchdown lead and another turnover led to a Coyotes touchdown with four seconds left in the half, forcing the halftime score to be 28-16 Paris.

“Those three guys were all over the place,” Carney said. “Those guys did a great job of being on their job assignments tonight.”

Ragsdale was involved in the passing game as well by catching two touchdown passes. Ensor also threw two touchdown passes to Logan Mitchell and had one go to Cole Dowell. The junior quarterback finished with 16-for-25 passing for the second straight week Ensor let loose of at least 25 throws, completing at least 60 percent of them.

Carney said Ensor prepares so well that he thinks the kid even watched more film on Schuyler County than he did this past week. He said “student of the game” fits Ensor well.

“We were talking this week and told me, ‘Coach, I think we need to run this.’ I said, ‘I had the same thought. Lucas, you’re going to start thinking like me and that’s a scary thing,’” Carney said, jokingly. “He does a great job of understanding what the other team is trying to do on defense and where the soft spots are that we need to attack. He’s out there and thinks like a coach, it makes my job a lot easier.”

All of that preparation will come into play next week when Paris hosts Schuyler County again at 7 p.m. next Friday in a No. 2 and No. 3 seed matchup.
