Paris shuts out Keytesville 66-0 to open season

Paris didn’t have to wait as long for its first shutout this season.

The Coyotes earned their first shutout last season in week two but came close to a shutout against Keytesville with Brunswick, Northwestern (Mendon) 72-8. Paris won 66-0 last Friday at Keytesville after only allowing 27 total yards on defense.

Head coach Cody Carney said Paris had dominant performances from Brad Skinner, Bryce Wade and Chase Kendrick, who respectively had nine, nine and eight tackles. Wade and Kendrick recovered two of the team’s three fumbles, and the Coyotes also had an interception to turn Keytesville over four times. This led to Paris only having to start one drive in its own territory later in the game.

“We had a lot of short fields to work with,” Carney said. “Our defense was geared up tonight. We played a lot of base. Our guys read their guys and got where they needed to go.”

Carney said the smothering defense helped Paris “get the ball rolling” by scoring 44 points in the first half. He said it wasn’t anything too special, but the execution led to a special victory.

Skinner had a big night on offense as well by running for 96 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries, and Luke Ensor passed for 128 yards and three touchdowns on 7-for-13 passing. Paris finished with 329 yards of total offense. Carney said he hopes the team’s positives carry into this Friday’s 7 p.m. home game against undefeated Orrick.

“We can get a lot of confidence from this,” Carney said. “Hopefully it will give us a lot of confidence going into (this week) in a tough one.”
