Mexico had a chance to face a state-ranked opponent before districts and walked off happy.
The Bulldogs hosted Class 4 No. 4 Moberly on Thursday in a makeup game that was postponed from an earlier date against their North Central Missouri Conference rival and won 3-2. Mexico (21-11) scored two runs in the seventh inning to respond to a two-run Moberly sixth inning for redemption from a 7-5 loss in Moberly (22-9) earlier this season. Colton Dickey, who went 1-for-2 with two walks and two stolen bases, stole second and then took third on a passed ball that turned into a run after the ball rolled out of play in the seventh inning. After Zach Jahn, who finished 2-for-4, hit a double later in the inning, and pinch runner Kael Smith eventually scored the game-winning run on a passed ball. Chance McCarty went 2-for-4, Kinser Groves pitched four innings with two hits, two strikeouts and one walk, and Brady Fox and Brayden Arnold each didn't allow an earned run. Kaden Abel had two RBIs for Moberly, Kyler Fanning had three steals and Nolan Samuel struck out seven and allowed six hits, two walks and one run in five innings.
Mexico is the No. 1 seed in Class 4 District 7 and will host for the first time since 2015. The Bulldogs face either Winfield (5-13) or Lutheran St. Charles (5-20) at 4 p.m. Monday.
