It had been a while since Mexico has won a baseball district championship, and it waited for a good time do it.
The Bulldogs won their first district title since 2014 in the Class 4 District 7 championship game Wednesday on their home turf, winning 3-2 over Fulton (13-19) on a walk-off single by Colton Dickey. That was the first run Mexico (23-11, Class 4 No. 9) scored on a hit as it took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Drew DeMint sacrifice fly and then went ahead 2-1 in the sixth innings on a sacrifice bunt by Kaden Benne. Benne pitched seven innings with four hits, four strikeouts, three walks and two earned runs in Mexico's first district title game appearance since 2023 and its first home district tournament since 2015.
Mexico plays at the Class 4 District 8 champion, which will be decided on Friday, in sectionals on Tuesday.
