The Mexico girls were down 49-48 with about a minute left in Wednesday's game before losing 55-48 to Southern Boone (5-10) at home. The Lady Bulldogs (9-9) were ahead by nine points in the third quarter before Southern Boone tied the game at 38 heading into the fourth quarter, where the Lady Eagles closed the game with an 8-0 run.
"It's a little mistakes that end up hurting us," head coach Makenzie Mudd said. "Not boxing out enough and giving them too many second-chance opportunities and missing way too many free throws. They are the little things we can control. We were letting calls from the refs that we didn't agree with get in our heads and control our heads instead of fixing the things we could fix and playing through those things we can't control."
Alyssa Miller led Mexico with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Grace Hudson followed with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Scottie Smith had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Sadie Ahern led Southern Boone with 19 points and four 3-pointers, and Ayla Yung finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
