North Callaway girls basketball will have players who aren’t scared of contact.
The Ladybirds have 16 girls with many stepping into bigger roles but will do it with a brand of toughness.
Head coach Andrew Klein said North Callaway has a young roster and will be inexperienced on varsity with four seniors, including two who didn’t play last year. Klein hopes this translates to defense and rebounding but also to being competitive no matter the opponent.
“We’re a really physical team,” Klein said. “It’s not just in size but in mentality. We’re not going to back down.”
Kymorie Myers is a senior who will be a primary post option for North Callaway. Grace Rasmussen is the other returning senior, and Violet Martin returns after being out last season with an injury while Addison Bedsworth rejoins the program since being a freshman.
Klein said he is happy to add the two latter seniors because they are good teammates and athletes. North Callaway has sophomores returning with starting experience such as Sophie Olsson and Anna Shryock.
“They’re good sophomores who will definitely lead our team in a lot of categories,” Klein said.
Morgan Benne is a junior, Icey Tomlinson is a junior and (Emily Huddleston) is a sophomore and are all expected to have bigger roles on varsity this season, Klein said.
North Callaway has had some of the program’s best scorers over the last several years, namely all-conference players Natalie Shryock and Lakyn Hartley and Riley Blevins before that. Klein said the next group likely to emerge as leading scorers have their own skillsets and are improving.
“I like our chances with Sophie Olsson, Kymorie Myers and Anna Shryock getting a lot of shots,” Klein said. “Both Sophie and Kymorie are physical and want to get to the rim, but Sophie has added a jump shot to her arsenal this summer. Anna didn’t shoot it a lot last year, but she was a freshman. She’s a different player than her sister (Natalie), but from beyond the arc, can be as good as her.”
North Callaway finished 13-14 last season. Klein said what he wants from these Ladybirds can’t be quantified.
“I want to see a team that prides ourselves on making whatever situation we’re in better,” Klein said. “How can we make our situation better and what each individual can do to help our team be better. There’s not a way you can track it, but I’ll know when I see it or will know when I don’t see it.”
