The Missouri Senior Medicare Patrol is warning older adults scams related to the new coronavirus are increasing.
Those who suspect fraud should call the SMP hotline at 1-888-515-6565.
Scammers use public health emergencies as opportunities for new fraud schemes, according to a news release.
There is not a an FDA-approved vaccine for the coronavirus, and while there are treatments for symptoms there is no cure. Scammers will use fear-based tactics to convince people that a vaccine is now offered, according to the release.
Public health officials will contact you if they believe one has been exposed to the virus, but they will not ask for insurance or financial information, the release stated.
SMP recommends people contact their health care provider if they are experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus.
Do not give out your Medicare number, Social Security number or personal information in response to unsolicited calls, texts, emails, home visits or booths at health fairs and other public venues. Be suspicious of those going door-to-door to offer COVID-19 or the coronavirus testing, supplies or treatments.
It is recommended older adults review their Medicare summary notice or explanation of benefits.
If you need help, contact SMP at 1-888-515-6565, or visit www.health.mo.gov or www.cdc.gov for more information.
