Sheriff’s office drone gets in aerial dogfight

A Vandalia man is facing felony charges for attempting to take down an Audrain County Sheriff’s Office drone Top Gun style.

Sheriff’s deputies were operating a drone over the city of Vandalia on Nov. 7 during a scheduled power outage in the city to do maintenance work on the system. The Sheriff was providing extra security during the outage.

According to court documents, officers made contact with Ryan D. Breden, 40, and another female walking the streets. The document says Breden was uncooperative with officers and at that time Breden learned about the drone flying over Vandalia.

A short time later the Sheriff’s drone came under “attack” from another drone according to the documents. The document says the drone, “Was operating in an obvious attempt to cause a collision or crash of the Sheriff's Office (drone).” The Sheriff’s drone was able to avoid the other drone.

The documents say officers on the ground spotted the rogue drone landing in the same area where deputies had made earlier contact with Breden. Officers spotted Breden walking towards his house with the drone and the gear. After interrogation, Breden admitted it was his drone but told officers he thought he was engaging a friend’s drone. The documents say the drone has a value of $750.

Breden has been charged with felony first-degree property damage and obstructing government operations.
