On the golf course, North Callaway never had an all-state golfer.
That is, until Anthony Russell finished 13th to become the program’s first. Russell returns along with three other varsity golfers to give North Callaway a strong team coming back.
Head coach Jason Smith said North Callaway could win the Eastern Missouri Conference, after falling one stroke short of back-to-back titles, and a district title after being “highly competitive” in tournaments such as winning an Elsberry tournament last year. Smith said the Thunderbirds could even qualify a team for state for the first time.
“Having four of five varsity players and key returners who will compete for the top five put us in a great position going into this season,” Smith said. “New younger players this year have some experience playing golf and are expected to improve and step into competitive roles on the team.”
There are 21 in the program this season, including 12 upperclassmen.
