SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield man pleaded guilty Wednesday to lesser charges in the fatal shooting his girlfriend in January 2019.
Chase Collins, 22, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter before the second day of his trial for second-degree murder in the death of Cheyenne Dancause, 20.
As part of the plea, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, The Springfield News-Leader reported.
According to court documents, Collins told authorities he "accidentally" shot Dancause on Jan. 15, 2019, during an argument at their home.
Two infants were in the bedroom where she was shot but were not harmed. One of the children was Dancause's daughter and the other was a friend's child.
Court documents say Collins initially told police he and Dancause were flailing their arms and somehow the gun went off. He later told police he remembered the gun in his hand but they both had hold of it.
Collins' attorney, Jason Coatney, said it is still unclear what exactly happened during the confrontation but Collins felt he could accept responsibility for involuntary manslaughter.
