The third time was the charm for Kaleb Baskett and Logan Mitchell.

The Van-Far junior Baskett had qualified for two state tournaments prior to this year’s at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield on May 18-19 and earned his first state medal by finishing 10th with a two-day score of 160. The Paris junior Mitchell tied Baskett’s score of 160 to finish 10th and medal for the first time in his third state appearance.

Baskett had a better second day during a tournament that was delayed and affected by wet conditions. He shot a 78, or six over par, to follow his 82 on the first day that put him in 17th position. Mitchell had a better Day 1 score of 79, or seven-over par, compared to his second-day score of 81. The two-day scores for Baskett and Mitchell at last year’s state tournament at Meadow Lake Acres at New Bloomfield were 178 and 181, respectively.

Pacey Reading played in his third and final state appearance for Van-Far, and he finished with a two-day score of 173 to tie him for 44th out of 96 golfers. Reading’s best day was his second-day mark of 80, or eight-over par, compared to his first day score of 93.

Centralia’s Marty finishes higher in second state appearance

Lyle Marty has two state golf appearances going into his junior season.

Marty competed at the Class 3 state tournament on May 18-19 at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia and tied for 37th with a two-day score of 159. His first-day score of 79, or nine-over par, was better than his 80 on Day 2 in a competition that dealt with weather delays and wet conditions.

In last year’s Class 2 state tournament at Sedalia Country Club, Marty had a two-day total of 178 to tie for 56th and a round low of 84, or 12-over par. The course was a par 70 this year compared to a par 72 last year.

Russell shot a 79, or seven-over par, on Day 2 for his better round of the tournament affected by weather delays and wet conditions. He had an 83 on Day 1.

Last year, Russell finished with a two-day score of 163 to tie for 13th at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia.
