Fueled by a big second-half rally, the North Callaway Thunderbirds football team improved to 4-2 with a 44-27 win over Wright City Friday night.
The contest opened with a pair of touchdowns off of interceptions - one by Wright City and one by the Thunderbirds, making for an unconventional start. Knotted at 6-6 after the first quarter, Wright City (1-5) led 21-14 at the half and with five minutes to play in the third quarter, the Thunderbirds trailed 27-22.
Things changed.
The Thunderbirds outscored Wright City 16-6 in the third and 14-0 in the fourth for the win. Powering the offense was the Thunderbirds’ running game, with Braydn O’Neal collecting 135 yards on seven rushes; Trevor Ray had 111 yards on 22 runs and broke through for three touchdowns. As a team, Callaway had 314 yards on 41 carries - an average of 7.65 yards.
Wright City’s offense primarily came through the air: 146 yards passing. Their running game was held to 31 rushes for 40 yards, and that’s factoring in a 72-yard run.
Defensively, the Thunderbirds got some key plays, including Payton Olsson’s first quarter touchdown interception, which he ran back 61 yards. Ray turned in a big night on defense, too, recording 15 solo tackles and 3 sacks.
Next up, the Thunderbirds head to Mark Twain Friday night. With the exception of a loss to Bowling Green, Mark Twain (7-1) has been steamrolling through the 2021 season, and is coming off a 38-8 win over Montgomery County. Game time is 7 p.m.
