There’s been a lot of special moments in the long and successful career of National Basketball Association (NBA) Head Coach and Mexico native Tyronn Lue, but this past Sunday will be one to remember.
Lue, a two-time NBA champion as a player and has a title to his name as a head coach, was in town on Sunday, May 14 for a ceremony to unveil the new sign at Tyronn Lue Park, formerly Garfield Park. Lue was able to come to town after his team, the Los Angeles Clippers, had its season end in the playoffs.
“I would love to be playing but it’s a great time to come home and see my mom, my grandmother, my sister, and all my aunties,” Lue said. “If I can’t be playing what’s better than this?”
Garfield Park, now Tyronn Lue Park, is a special place for Lue because it’s where he spent so much time as a kid working on the game that would define his life.
“This is where I made most of the shots in my life down here at Garfield Park,” Lue said. “That’s where it all started and for me, it’s a dream come true. The place where I grew up playing basketball every day by myself, or five on five with my friends, and to have it named after me, it’s a great honor.”
Lue hopes that the naming of the park will be an inspiration to the youth of Mexico and help them develop their aspirations.
“They know me,” Lue said. “When you come down and see Tyronn Lue Park it’s inspiring them that one day it could be named after them. That’s what it’s all about passing it down to the generations so they can see they hope and have something to strive towards and that’s always a great thing.”
The ceremony was held on Mother’s Day which for Lue also has special meaning. Lue had scores of friends and family in attendance including his mother, grandmother, and sister, three women incredibly important to him and whom he credits with molding him into the person he is today.
