Van-Far boys finish summer well above .500 with small roster
The Van-Far boys basketball team didn’t have as many kids play this summer but had impressive results.
The Indians had six regularly show up for scrimmages, and they were 13-3 in game situations and 2-1 in two-minutes scenarios where they were ahead by three points, down by three or tied with two minutes left in a game — which was done at a camp at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
“We had six kids show up religiously this whole summer and those kids got a lot of minutes in practice and games,” head coach Pat Connaway said. “I’m very pleased with the way we progressed this summer, but we have a long way to go to get where we can win a district title and advance in the playoffs. That will be our goal and focus.”
Van-Far was 8-0 while playing bigger schools in Fulton League play and was 4-2 in the Central Missouri camp, with one of their losses happening to Class 4 Mountain Grove.
“Dedication needs to improve, but overall, as I enter my final season at Van-Far, I am happy with the work the kids put in this summer,” Connaway said.
Van-Far girls finish one of their best summers
The Van-Far girls basketball team is feeling good before next season.
The Lady Indians just finished one of their best summers, according to head coach Heather Minter, as they recorded a 14-11 record with their scrimmage schedule.
“Overall, I was happy with our performance over the summer — one of the best summers we have had for our program,” Minter said. “If we can get our mental toughness in check, we will be alright, but that is our main struggle right now.”
Van-Far played in scrimmages at Higbee and Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, Monroe City, South Shelby, Lindenwood and Culver-Stockton. There were four days the Lady Indians won more games than they lost.
“We still don't have a leader, which is a concern, but we will be better than last year,” Minter said. “We are growing and getting better and the girls know what they need to do for us to improve.”
