Van-Far’s offensive woes were limited to one quarter Saturday, but it made a difference.
The Indians lost 65-60 to Canton in the third-place game of the Tony Lenzini Tournament in Palmyra after being outscored 19-9 in the third quarter. The game was tied 30 at halftime.
“We were trying to take the last shot of the quarter trailing by four, and we had another unforced turnover, which led to an unguarded, uncontested 3 by Canton with three seconds left,” head coach Pat Connaway said. “We gave up six points in the final six seconds. It was very frustrating and took the wind out of our sails. We have to clean up those awful stretches where we have careless unforced turnovers. We didn't catch the ball, we threw it away and just made too many mental mistakes.”
Preston Brewer led Canton (13-4) and all scorers with 29 points, and Pacey Reading led Van-Far (13-5) with 24 points. Carson Huff had 20 points for the Indians.
Reading led Van-Far with 24 points, and Gaven Gaston followed with 15 points in Van-Far’s 63-47 first-round win over Hannibal (1-9). The Indians then lost 69-39 to Palmyra (14-2), and Huff led with 13 points and Reading had 10 points.
Van-Far defends its championship in the 100th annual Bowling Green Tournament this week.
