A relaunch of the Van-Far School District's Bright Futures program kicked off with a breakfast at the Van-Far Elementary School on Thursday, March 9.
Just one of the many things Bright Futures offers is the Lunch Buddy program. Before COVID hit Van-Far had 75 lunch buddies. The program matches volunteers with students to enjoy lunch together once or twice a month in the cafeteria. It’s a mentoring program that benefits both parties.
Those involved develop great relationships, broaden their minds, and provide intergenerational support for each other. The Lunch Buddy program took a huge hit during COVID.
Kathy Allen with Van-Far Bright Futures spoke at the relaunch breakfast and said they rely on the community to make Bright Futures happen. "All children need a connection. They change your life and you change theirs."
The Van-Far Bright Futures program started in 2016 and provides $5,000 of food to elementary students every year. Lois Curtis has been a member of the Lunch Buddy program at Van-Far since it started. She was presented a plaque for her dedication during the breakfast by Van-Far Elementary School Principal Brian Hummel and by Van-Far Director of Special Education, Melissa Curtis Deimeke.
