The Indians played their preseason jamboree on Friday night at Monroe City High School against Monroe City, Mexico and Scotland County. They open the season at 7 p.m. this Friday at Westran.
After weeks of practice this summer, head coach Lucas Gibson said it just felt good for his guys to play other schools after solely “beating on each other.”
“It was a lot of what we expected,” Gibson said. “There were a few little things we need to work on like better blocking. We need to be a little bit quicker because we looked a little slow off the start.”
Gibson said there were some “jitters” because this was the first outside contact for Van-Far. He said the Indians should be ready for opening night based on how they looked against Mexico and Monroe City — programs who have had success in the past.
Scotland County will be Van-Far's final regular season opponent once again this season. Gibson said the Tigers should be better at the end of the season like the Indians.
“Scotland County will be tougher at the end of the season,” Gibson said. “They were last year, and I expect the same thing. That’s the way we are, too. We just have to try to keep getting better every week.”
Gibson joked he was disappointed Van-Far couldn’t score on fellow Audrain County school Mexico, but he is happy his team wasn’t scored upon. Except for one touchdown allowed to Monroe City, he said the defense held its own and that’s what he wants to see before opening night.
“That always makes it easier if you can shut somebody out or at least keep the score down,” Gibson said. “I was proud of our defense tonight.”
