The Van-Far girls bounced back offensively a day later.
The Lady Indians lost 44-36 against Community R-6 (7-2) on Dec. 19 but returned to their home court not even 24 hours later to beat Liberty (Mountain View) 55-36 on Dec. 20 in the afternoon. Elliott Utterback and Chloe Zumwalt combined for 35 points in Van-Far highest-scoring effort of the season so far.
While Liberty (3-4) is a Class 3 school that Van-Far (3-4) hasn’t played before, head coach Heather Minter said she knew the strategy would be to go inside with Zumwalt.
“Zumy played how we wanted her to play, and that was big for us,” Minter said. “We knew they didn’t have a big person. She’s been struggling so we’ve been trying to keep her motivated as much as possible.”
Minter said Zumwalt missed close-range shots early this season so steps were taken to turn negativity into positivity. Zumwalt played some junior varsity minutes before being relied on heavily on Saturday.
“We told her to stay positive because it’s going to come around,” Minter said. “She needed this big time tonight for her confidence.”
Utterback knocked down some 3-pointers, and Minter said the rest of the Lady Indians looked good in the offense as well, including Khloe Wallace hitting shots and Kenya Jones making great passes.
“It was running in a flow,” Minter said. “Everybody was playing free and having fun today.”
Van-Far plays in the Moberly Holiday Shootout at Moberly Area Community College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Moberly (3-5).
