Van-Far healthy, sharp before districts in 46-14 win at Scotland County

After allowing 105 points in losses the previous two weeks, Van-Far won again and got what it wanted from its regular season finale.

The Indians won 46-14 at Scotland County (5-4) to secure the No. 2 seed in the Class 1 District 2 tournament, which earned them a bye week and a home game at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 against Crystal City (3-6). Van-Far (5-4) took an 18-8 halftime lead before outscoring Scotland County 28-6 in the second half.

Head coach Lucas Gibson said he wanted the team to be healthy before districts so the extra week definitely helps. Gaven Gaston and Evan Utterback were back on the field after leaving last week’s game against North Callaway with injuries and contributed in the scoring.

“Gaven was out last week for most of the game and was back in on defense, which helps us a bunch,” Gibson said. “Evan had a lot of carries tonight.”

Van-Far scored its most points since dropping 52 on Bowling Green three weeks prior despite dealing with a slow start against Scotland County. The Indians took their first lead 12-8 on an Utterback touchdown halfway through the second quarter and then scored again with 16 seconds left before halftime.

Gibson said Van-Far broke out the sweep pass play for the first time since Bowling Green. Kasen Christian threw the ball to Gaston, who heaved the ball to Pacey Reading for a touchdown to make it 18-8. They did it again for a 31-yard touchdown to make it 26-8 halfway through the third quarter.

“Bowling Green was the first time we did it,” Gibson said. “I don’t think we’ve shown it since then, but we pulled it out tonight.”

Van-Far tried something different on defense as well to follow some weakness defending the pass this season, Gibson said. He expected Scotland County to throw it.

“We went to more zone coverage, and that seemed to work tonight,” Gibson said.

Van-Far prepares to host a district game for the third straight season after going many years without one.
