Van-Far, North Callaway boys play clean game, Van-Far wins 58-47

Saturday’s Bowling Green tournament boys consolation game was clean but uneven in the final minutes.

In a rematch after a North Callaway win at Van-Far earlier in the season, Van-Far beat the Thunderbirds 58-47 to win fifth place. North Callaway (12-8) was outscored 21-9 in the fourth quarter, and the game was tied with about three minutes left in the game.

The teams combined for 11 turnovers, but Van-Far’s offense was more potent in the fourth quarter and in the second quarter by outscoring North Callaway 19-8.

Van-Far head coach Pat Connaway said he was pleased how Van-Far (12-7) had a season-low five turnovers and outrebounded North Callaway despite being undersized. This all added up to redemption for a 19-point loss to North Callaway at home.

“That is huge mentally to know you are doing things right, trust the system and you will see positive results,” Connaway said.

Pacey Reading led Van-Far with 22 points, including 17 combined points in the second and fourth quarters, and seven rebounds. Bryce Reading had 14 points and three 3-pointers.

Jake Blevins led North Callaway with 17 points, three 3-pointers and three steals, and Dalton Brewer followed with 12 points and four 3-pointers.

Van-Far girls has day of redemption, trophy vs Elsberry

After losing to Eastern Missouri Conference foe Elsberry, the Van-Far girls made sure they didn’t get the same result.

The Lady Indians beat Elsberry 44-40 on Saturday in the consolation game of the Bowling Green Tournament. They lost 40-33 at Elsberry (10-9) about a month ago.

Elliott Utterback and Chloe Zumwalt each led Van-Far (7-10) with 19 points.

North Callaway girls eliminated from Bowling Green tournament

After losing for the second time of the season to Louisiana on Wednesday, the North Callaway girls were eliminated from the Bowling Green tournament on Friday.

The Ladybirds lost 46-23 to Eastern Missouri Conference foe Van-Far (6-10) after beating the Lady Indians on the road earlier this season.

Sophie Olsson led North Callaway (6-13) with 14 points and seven rebounds while Mylee Keller led Van-Far with 17 points, including 14 in the first half. Chloe Zumwalt had 10 points for the Lady Indians.

On Monday, North Callaway won 47-40 at Fulton (4-11). Sophie Olsson led the Ladybirds with 26 points, 10 rebounds and four 3-pointers.
