Van-Far girls win first game 57-27 at South Callaway
With its young roster, the Van-Far girls felt good to be in the win column early this season.
The Lady Indians won 57-27 at South Callaway on Tuesday in their second game of the season.
“It was a solid team win last night,” head coach Heather Minter said. “The kids played well and played together.”
There were several career-best performances from the younger Lady Indians including Elliott Utterback with 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, Chloe Zumwalt with 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, and Mylee Keller with 11 points and four steals. Senior point guard Carmen Wilburn had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Van-Far lost 64-48 at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Louisiana (1-1, 1-0 EMO) on Thursday to move its overall record to 1-2 and conference record to 0-1. The Lady Indians face Moberly (2-0) at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Centralia Invitational Tournament.
Indians tough out road 63-51 conference win at Louisiana
The Van-Far boys are undefeated early in the season.
Head coach Pat Connaway said the Indians weren’t at their best on Thursday but were good enough to win their Eastern Missouri Conference opener at Louisiana (1-2, 0-1 EMO) 63-51.
"Tonight, we came out and applied pressure early, ran the floor really well and then got tired towards the end of the first quarter," Connaway said. "We created a lot of turnovers early but missed several opportunities at the rim. In the third quarter, we were flat and key kids got into foul trouble and then we weren't able to get a good flow in the offense. Louisiana got physical, and we didn't handle it well. They whipped us in the third quarter and cut the lead to five heading to the fourth."
Connaway said Van-Far (2-0, 1-0 EMO) took control in the final six minutes in the fourth quarter after executing its offense with 16 combined points by Nikos Connaway and Pacey Reading. The Indians outscored Louisiana 23-16 in the fourth quarter.
Connaway led Van-Far with 24 points, including 15 in the first half, six rebounds, six steals and four assists; Reading followed with 15 points and three assists; Carter Jennings had nine points; Gaven Gaston had seven points; Carson Huff pulled down six rebounds; and Gage Gibson had six assists.
Van-Far begins its run in the Centralia Invitational Tournament against Centralia (3-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
