Three Lady Indians were able to walk away from this season with postseason recognition.
Van-Far junior Reeve Woodall was named to the Eastern Missouri Conference second team, and seniors Carmen Wilburn and Katelyn Sutton were each part of the Class 2 District 5 team as a catcher and outfielder, respectively.
Van-Far finished with a 3-17 record in another rebuilding season, this time under first-year head coach Shaylen Bailey. Despite the struggles this year, Bailey said her award players deserved all the recognition.
“These girls have worked hard during practice and outside of practice,” Bailey said. “They continually improved this season, and I am proud that they got recognition for that”
Woodall made the all-conference team for the first time in her career and was flexible this season after being called upon as the primary pitcher in response to Dalana Gay’s season-ending injury. When she had the chance to hit, Woodall had a .417 batting average, .611 slugging percentage, 15 hits and seven doubles and also only had three errors on defense.
“Reeve stepped up and pitched a majority of our games and improved throughout the season while also being our strongest batter,” Bailey said.
Wilburn owned a .293 average, 12 hits and seven RBI at the plate and a .942 fielding percentage behind the plate as the Indians’ catcher. She committed three errors, allowed three passed balls and recorded nine assists.
“Carmen worked hard behind the plate, only letting three get by and having only three errors this entire season,” Bailey said. “She was our strongest defender and a great leader for our younger athletes.”
Sutton had a .333 average, .429 slugging, 14 hits and nine stolen bases while only committing five errors as the center fielder.
“Katelyn worked hard in the outfield, stepping up and taking control while also being one of our top batters and being a leader in the outfield,” Bailey said.
