Anna Washburn felt playing soccer at Central Christian College of the Bible was her calling.
The Mexico senior made her future plans official on Thursday during a signing ceremony at Mexico High School. Washburn plans to study criminal justice at the Moberly school.
Washburn’s church is Just As I Am Cowboy Church in Paris, and it means a lot to her. She said some members went to CCCB, so it excited her even more when she learned she could play soccer there, too.
“It felt like a calling to go to that college,” Washburn said. “I’m very involved in my church. Some of my church went there and said it was a very good college.”
Washburn has been playing soccer since fifth grade. Family has been a key word in her career and applies to her team as a Lady Bulldog.
“It’s pretty much a family,” Washburn said. “You pretty much grow with people on the team. We all joke around with each other. Some days, we go hang out.”
Head coach Brad Norton took over in the position this year and “couldn’t be more excited” to see a player signing to play in college.
“Not everybody wants to play in college or has the opportunity,” Norton said. “It’s pretty rare thing to be able to do that. It’s pretty awesome to have the opportunity to go compete at a place where you love playing. I couldn’t be more happy for her and more proud of Anna achieving that goal.”
Norton said Washburn has primarily been a defender this year but can fill multiple roles. He said she has “pretty much played every position that there was” at times this season.
“Anna is willing to do whatever is asked,” Norton said. “She’s willing to fill in whatever position when there is a space needed. You call that the ultimate team player. It’s pretty awesome that she can have that flexibility and the skillset to be able fill in all those different roles.”
Norton said Washburn has done “an amazing job playing midfield.”
“I enjoy mid most because that’s where I played a lot,” Washburn said.
