Gavin Allen had many strikeout victims but wasn’t one himself on Monday.
Community R-6 won its season opener 7-3 at home against district opponent Wellsville-Middletown behind the 14 strikeouts and 3-for-3 day at the plate by the senior Allen. He also scored three runs to help the Trojans overcome a 3-0 first-inning deficit that was also erased mainly because of a two-RBI home run by Mason Carroll.
Allen’s final line on the mound was 6 1/3 innings with six hits, three runs, three walks and his 14 punchouts. Carroll threw five pitches for the final two outs after Allen tallied 103 pitches.
Mason Guzy hit a two-RBI triple as part of Wellsville’s early offense before Ayden Meranda singled home Allen in the bottom half of the first inning. Allen singled his way on after the first two Trojans struck out and then Allen continued to will Community back in it.
Wellsville went down by several more strikeouts to set up Carroll with a 3-2 deficit in the third inning. Allen singled his way on to lead off the frame before advancing to third base on a steal and error. Carroll worked the count to 3-2 against Guzy before lining a pitch over the left field fence for a 4-3 lead.
The Tigers allowed four unearned runs and seven stolen bases. Allen was credited with stealing five bags.
Community was scheduled to play again at home on Tuesday against Clopton before traveling to Marion County for a 5 p.m. Thursday game.
