Mexico boys

The Bulldogs went 3-0 on June 10 in the Harrisburg shootout against Harrisburg, Cairo and Hallsville.

“This group has the ability to mix up defenses on the fly and are very unselfish on the offensive end,” head coach Darren Pappas said. “We have done a great job of moving the basketball this summer and playing as a team.”

Mexico then went 3-0 on June 12 in the Central Methodist University camp against Boonville, Riverview Gardens and Willow Springs.

“We struggled a bit to get going but our defense held strong,” Pappas said. “We got a ton of offensive rebounds which led to extra offensive opportunities and we capitalized. As a unit, I like how we are competing and playing team-oriented basketball.”

On June 14-15, Mexico went 5-1 in the Rib City Shootout in Dexter. The Bulldogs defeated Benton, Ill.; Jackson; and Carlisle County, Ky. on the first day. They played Puxico, Rockwood Summit, and Ravenwood (Brentwood), Tenn. on the second day.

Over the weekend, Mexico went 5-1 over three days at the University of Central Missouri team camp in Warrensburg with its only loss happening against a team from Illinois.

The Lady Bulldogs lost three games on June 6 in the Monroe City Shootout, losing one game by just one point and another by only two points.

“We had a mix of players from seniors to freshmen and the group has never played together,” head coach Makenzie Mudd said. “I was really proud of how hard all of the girls worked and the improvements that I saw throughout the day. We have a lot of great things to build on throughout this summer and going into next season. Senior Claire Hudson was a great floor leader for the team, especially the freshmen, who provided a lot of good minutes.”

Mexico then played three games at the Lady Coyote Shootout in Paris on June 20, winning all of them. The Lady Bulldogs defeated New Franklin 31-27, Westran 32-29 and Scotland County 40-15. Mudd said she had 14 players available and was able to use a lot of different lineups.

“I was so impressed with the effort and communication that I saw today between the players to make some great plays on offense and to make solid stops on defense,” Mudd said. “We have been showing great growth this summer, and I am excited to watch it continue into the season.”

North Callaway girls

The Ladybirds went 1-2 on June 18 at the Harrisburg Shootout.

They had five players due to softball or injuries but managed to defeat Pilot Grove and lose to California and Hermann.

“We played exceptionally hard with a very young group of girls,” head coach Andrew Klein said.
