BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Community R-6 good from start in 12-2 win at Slater

In what was the beginning of Community R-6’s baseball schedule, Eli Johnson was strong at leadoff for the Trojans.

The junior catcher finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two doubles and two RBI to lead the Trojans to a 12-2 victory in six innings at Central Activities Conference foe Slater (0-3, 0-2 CAC) on Tuesday.

Johnson led off the game with a liner in right field and eventually scored on a groundout by Ayden Meranda. Community (4-1, 1-0 CAC) made it 2-0 in the first inning on a Mason Carroll single to give him one of three RBI.

Community scored two runs in the second inning, plated three in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Johnson RBI double, and then Johnson’s RBI double began the five-run sixth inning.

Gavin Allen and Mason Carroll split pitching responsibilities as each went three innings. Allen started the game and struck out eight and allowed three hits and two walks before Carroll fanned three and allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk.

Community was scheduled to play at Van-Far (0-4) on Thursday before hosting Prairie Home with Bunceton (1-4) the next day. The Trojans then host New Haven (0-7) at 5 p.m. Monday.

North Callaway defeats defending EMO champ Bowling Green 8-1

North Callaway has tore through the Eastern Missouri Conference so far this season.

In three conference games, the Thunderbirds have outscored their EMO opponents 32-5 with their third conference victory happening on Monday at Bowling Green 8-1. The Bobcats are the defending conference champions after going undefeated in the EMO last year and had a three-game winning streak against North Callaway that traced back to 2018.

North Callaway (4-2, 3-0 EMO) scored in the first inning like the previous two victories, plating three runs against Bowling Green (3-5, 1-3 EMO). The Thunderbirds finished eight hits but had standout efforts on the mound from Davis Woods and Keaton Bell.

Woods went six innings in the start while allowing five hits, five walks and one run and striking out five. Bell pitched a hitless seventh inning.

The first three Thunderbird hitters reached base at the beginning of the game to set up a groundout RBI and then a RBI single by Matthew Weber, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI. 

Weber made it 6-1 in a four-run fifth inning for North Callaway prior to Sam Pezold scoring another with a triple.

Kyle Pennell finished with two RBI , and Braydn O’Neal tacked on another in the sixth inning while finishing with two stolen bases and two walks.

North Callaway defeated Wellsville-Middletown (3-1, 3-0 EMO) on on Thursday in a matchup of undefeated conference teams as the Thunderbirds won 18-0 in five innings. Keaton Bell struck out seven, and the North Callaway offense finished with 12 hits and seven extra base hits.
