When the third quarter began, the Bulldogs held a tenuous 8 point lead. When it came to an end eight minutes later, Mexico was on top 46-25 – a comfortable 21 point gap.
That proved to be more than enough on Tuesday, as the Bulldogs handled Moberly, 60-37 to claim win number 12 on the season.
The 17 points Ed Costley’s squad piled up in the third were part of a 22-4 run that extended over three quarters and put the Spartans away. It began when Mya Miller drove toward the glass and dropped in a reverse lay up at the end of the second period.
Alexis Willer closed it out with a nifty three to open the final quarter. In between a pattern developed.
“We’d get a turnover, we’d get a stop,” said Abby Oetting.
“And a big momentum play, and someone would take a charge,” added Riley Thurman.
That someone was Oetting, who drained a three, hustled back on defense and held her ground at the post. She then retraced her steps and converted the turnover into another three.
All 8 of her points on the night came in the third.
Riley Blevins was instrumental in keeping Mexico in the game early on. Thanks in part to her first half outburst, Blevins tallied 18 points on the night. Miller kicked in with 11 and Riley Thurman 10.
Taylor DeMint and Willer fired 5 each, and Jordyn Thurman hit 3.
